Event Report 10th February 2013

Sunday Event Report 10th February 2013

A warm morning greeted the increasing numbers of riders to the Sunday Club Event.  In all 15 riders turned out to race in perfect conditions with little wind from any direction.  More riders returned from a long hiatus including Steve Green and Simon Thompson who joined by Bill Sutcliffe in the limit group.  Handicapper Peter Rees had pulled this group in 1 minute from the week before and they had an 8 minute head start on scratch.

Second limit consisted of Al Baker, Scott McLeod (back from his traffic injury), Anthony Dean and  Rod ‘The Surge’ Fergus – no doubt in his last start off just 4 and a half minutes!  At this generous handicap they were always going to be hard to catch.

The chopping block had all but been confirmed at Brendan Forsyth, Kevin Ford along with Dave Jarvis and Hamish Nott before the late arrival of Dr Kenny Clark who strengthened this group considerably.  This group left at 7 minutes after limit and just 1 minute in front of the scratch group of Steve Hines, Kevin Goodman and Frank ‘Sparky’ Stevens.

Block were able to hold off scratch, largely thanks to Ken, until after the turn and this group formed a strong working bunch of 8 on the way home trying to chase down the front two groups which had also combined just after the turn.  It appeared to both the Fox and the handicapper that the bunch of limit and second limit were rolling over the wrong way accidentally but to those behind this just looked like another attempt at trying to maintain their generous handicap for another week!

That said the race became one group at around Dinyah on the way home with about 4km left.  It was here that Rod ‘Sergus’ came into his own trying to split up the bunch much to the chagrin of all concerned who were close to their limit!  Fergus was duly dobbed in to the handicapper by his bunch-mates at the end as to his strength and can expect a less generous handicap next week!

It was left to Steve Hines to make the move that would prove decisive as he pulled both Kevin and Frank off the front of the group with 1km remaining.  Kevin would take the spoils in a very slick 38.43 for both the win and fastest time.  Hines followed with Frank in 3rd as Ken Clark and Dave Jarvis finished in under 40 minutes from the block group.

A quick reminder that interclub racing starts on the 23rd February and our local race at the Stockinbingal Fair is scheduled for the 17th March so there is plenty of time to get some training in.  A big thank you once again to our commissaires Pete Rees, Al Moston, Peter Hines and the Fox for their ongoing support.  As our numbers are increasing a quick reminder to all riders to obey the road rules – particularly at the start and the end of the event when there are large numbers of riders present.  Please be mindful of traffic so that we do not impede its flow and clear the road quickly after the event.

Event Report 4th February 2013

Sunday Event Report 3rd February 2013

Warm conditions greeted the riders for the weekly Club Development Event on Sunday morning.   The club has recently taken the step to downgrade the status of the traditional Sunday race to a club development event to encourage the participation of more riders, all who are licensed, in club events at a more affordable price.   This also allows for the handicapper to use place more experienced riders with newcomers  to educate them on the nuances and tactics of bunch riding.

With regular handicapper Peter Rees returning this week the back markers were looking for a bit of reprieve following the severe handicap of last week offered by “The Fox” – a traditional supporter of the limit markers.  That said it was great to see the return to the event of Steve Green and Bill Sutcliffe who received 9 minutes from scratch as the limit markers.  Also returning from some time off and one appendix lighter was Brendan Forsyth who left with Rick Martin, Peter Lott and the generously handicapped Al “Kilometres” Baker, Tim Condon and Rod Fergus at 4minutes 30 seconds.  It was bemusing to all that the in-form Fergus was handicapped so easily except those that had seen his secret handshake with the handicapper.

Chopping block left at 7 minutes from go with Gary Halloran being ably assisted by Kevin Ford and Tim Meares (the latter helping for at least the first 5km of the outward trip!)  Starting from scratch were the group of Dave Jarvis, Kevin Goodman, James Baldry, Hamish Nott and Mark Ward.  Wardy left the start at a pace which could only be described as EPO-like and nearly left his compatriots behind.  This fast start, and the collapse of Meares’ lungs and legs on Pettit’s Hill allowed scratch and block to merge at around the turn.

Unbeknown to these chasers was the fact that limit and second limit had joined only 5km into the 26km journey and were working well together.  Try as they might they were unable to catch the well organised group of burglars out in front.   The experienced Fergus had the group working like a well-oiled machine, shedding riders one by one as they sacrificed themselves for the greater good of the group over the last 10km.  Within the last 500m it was clear that Scratch would be waiting another week for a victory and it came down to a battle of three at the front with Rod Fergus leading over the line from Tim Condon and Al Baker to take the spoils ( money well spent at the start with the golden handshake!).  Kevin Goodman and Mark Ward narrowly missed catching and were a mere 10 seconds behind at the finish.    Kevin claimed fastest time in a very slick 39minutes and 40 seconds whilst Tim Meares declared himself officially last.  Tim also warned everyone to stay away from his cycling “Boot Camp” at Narooma next year – citing that as the cause of his poor form!

A reminder to all those who have yet to renew or take out a license that this is now a requirement of Cootamundra Cycle Club to hold at least a Club Ride Silver license.  This license gives you insurance cover against accident or injury to other riders during one of the weekly organised rides (for example Thursday afternoons, Saturday mornings or Sunday Events).   All riders can now participate in these rides provided they hold at least a Silver Ride Membership, worth $77 with Cycling Australia.  With the pleasing increase in riders of late it is becoming more important that everyone on these rides is licensed.

Club Race Report (29 April 2012)

A warm Autumn Sunday morning created an excuse for many riders preparing for this years Haycarters race a chance to test their legs a fortnight out from the big event. In all 22 riders signed on for the race, a good turnout considering a few regular Cootamundra riders were missing due to the Tumut for the mountain bike race on Sunday afternoon.

With regular handicapper Peter Rees away for the morning it was up to the ever-reliable “Fox” Manning to decide the handicaps.  Limit were to start off a generous 12 minutes with the group consisting of Robyn McClintock-Holder, Carmel Payne and Janine Hobson of Young.  The next group started at 9 minutes and 45 seconds from scratch and consisted of Bill Lang, Penny Nott and Steve Green.  They were being referred to at the start as “Fox’s Foxers” for many of the latter groups thought this group was far too strong for their handicap and self-claimed ‘lack of fitness’!

Following them a further 2 minutes back were Phil Davies (starting behind his daughter), David Lang (starting behind his father), Barry Rose and Tim Dowling.  Peter ‘Hot Pants’ Lott, Simon Hobson, Chris Hall and the ever improving Tim Condon started second block another 3 minutes behind.  These groups worked well but were always going to find it hard to stay away with the firepower behind.

The chopping block was made up of local riders Brendan Forsyth and Paul Deep who combined with Garry ‘Retro’ Halloran (Grenfell) and Shaun Stewart (Young).  Scratch gave block 2.15 minutes start and consisted of Mark Ward, Frank Stephens, Sean Williams (Young) and Kevin ‘Lefty’ Goodman (Young).

By the ironbarks on the way out second limit were closing in fast on limit and in fact rode straight through the limit group over the hill with Nott and Lang showing a clean pair of heels over the rise.  So much for being ‘underdone’ and not ‘race-fit’!

The chasing groups of block, second block and scratch combined over the final hill on the way out as a few riders were dropped from the front groups.  This formed a large chase group who worked well together to try and catch the front markers.  The group of Davies and company had begun to splinter and were stuck in no-mans land between the large chasing bunch and the burglars from second limit.

By the time scratch passed the ironbarks a four minute gap still had to be made up to the duo out in front and it looked like The Fox had once again looked after his beloved frontmarkers.  Despite the best efforts of the now large chase group, Bill and Penny who were still working well together, were not to be caught. Alas earlier fears about the large head-start were realised as Penny finished the stronger of the two with Bill taking second place.  In the bunch sprint for third Sean Stewart led home Lefty Goodman and Franklin Stephens.  Lefty also took out fastest time in a slick 37 minutes and  33 seconds for the 26km course.

It was great to see so many riders racing at this time of year and hopefully more will turn out for next weeks Club Race – the last before the Haycarters Handicap weekend.
